In 2014 I was fortunate enough to opt for voluntary redundancy from a job that I had truly loved for nearly 20 years. It was hard, and took quite some time to come to terms with what felt like a bereavement, but it also was a great opportunity.

How often do we get a chance to start over in our forties after all? So, I took 6 months off, attended an evening class, spent time with family and caught up on some of the big jobs round the house. Then in the November I launched a small jewellery business. I have always made jewellery for myself, but mostly it had been simple wire work. I’d also wanted to go to university to study silversmithing, but it was just too costly when I was a teenager; so here, finally was my chance.

Since then I’ve been practicing and learning new techniques, regularly send my work for formal hallmarking with the London Assay Office and have quite active Facebook, Instagram, Twitter accounts as well as my little shops on Etsy, Folksy and my website, all under @DawnGillDesigns. I’ve discovered even more inspiring people through these and use this blog to document anything exciting that I’ve discovered, the semi-formal challenges I participate in (2020 is #MakeARingAMonth).

You can contact me using the form on this blog, direct via email (DawnGillDesigns@gmail.com) or by messaging me through any of the aforementioned accounts. Devon is famously rubbish for connectivity though, so despite having all these on my phone, I may not be able to respond til I get back home

  2. Hello… just started following you and will go through your posts to see all you make 😍
I love jewelry as well and would love to see everything ♥️

    • oh dear! They aren’t very good photos! I’m doing a new challenge this year, ‘RingAMonth’ and I’ve just completed June’s. It’s going to double as a scraphappy, but it’s going to be late to the party, as I only took it out the tumbler yesterday, and haven’t had a chance to edit the photos. Thanks for your enthusiasm.

I am a jewelry artist/designer as well and just ran across your fun & entertaining blog. I was researching metal clay kilns, and stumbled upon the Ultralite. I honestly have been wanting a kiln for several years, but always seem to shy away from the expensive price tag! I am really enjoying your jewelry posts & seeing what you create with your kiln. I work mostly with copper, but I have many requests for silver and I think this might be a nice “toe in the water” experiment ♡ keep up the posts… I will be following! ~ Take care, Suz

    • Hi Suz, what a lovely and kind comment to leave, thank you. I love my Ultralite, but before you commit to it, remember that is has some restrictions for metal clay firing – it’s not sealed; the ‘airspace’ between it and the lid is minimal, so on the occasions I’ve attempted anything that’s hollow or of any real depth, I’ve packed it and supported it with kiln blanket. And of course, there’s no way to control the temperature. I think a Prometheus would be my preferred way to go if I was planning one purely for clay, or used it for lots of clay work, rather than just a few pieces, but as I wanted to be able to use him for Keum-Boo, I had to compromise – and he’s perfect for that 🙂 . Thanks again, hope you have a good festive season, hugs.
